There is something strangely familiar about standing in front of a great vintage car and looking at a finely made mechanical watch. They may belong to completely different worlds, but the feeling they create is remarkably similar. Both are machines built to perform, yet through craftsmanship, design and history they become something much more: objects of desire.
Perhaps that is why A. Lange & Söhne has found such a natural home in the world of classic cars and Concours d’Elegance.
For more than a decade, the Glashütte manufacture has been involved with some of the most prestigious events in the international collector-car calendar. From Lake Como to Hampton Court and Newport, Lange has built a relationship with a community that shares many of its own values: mechanical excellence, authenticity, attention to detail and a deep respect for things worth preserving.
Where mechanics become art
A great collector car is not necessarily the fastest or most powerful. Often, what makes it special is the way its engineering, proportions, materials and history come together.
The same can be said of a Lange.
At a Concours, cars are no longer simply means of transportation. They become historical objects. Their originality matters, their craftsmanship matters, and even the smallest details can tell a story. The same philosophy applies to a mechanical timepiece, where hundreds of individually finished components can be hidden beneath the dial.
It is this appreciation for things made properly, and preserved properly, that makes the relationship between the two worlds feel so natural.
Villa d’Este: the perfect meeting point
One of the clearest examples is the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como. A. Lange & Söhne has been a partner since 2012, making it one of the manufacture’s longest-running relationships with the world of classic cars.
Villa d’Este is perhaps the perfect environment for this dialogue. Surrounded by the lake, Italian gardens and the historic Grand Hotel Villa d’Este, some of the most extraordinary cars ever built are presented as works of art.
For the Best of Show winner, Lange creates a unique timepiece. The watch is traditionally personalised with hand engraving, turning it into a mechanical counterpart to the automotive masterpiece receiving the award.
The connection is more than aesthetic. A chronograph, with its ability to measure elapsed time, has always had an obvious relationship with motorsport and performance. In both cars and watches, technical complexity only becomes truly fascinating when it is combined with elegance.
Hampton Court: where history meets design
The same philosophy continues in Britain.
A. Lange & Söhne has supported the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace since 2018, and this year Watchype will be there alongside the manufacture to experience the event first-hand and tell its story through our channels.
Taking place from 4 to 6 September 2026, the Concours brings around 60 of the rarest cars from around the world to the grounds of Hampton Court Palace. The setting could hardly be more appropriate: centuries of British history provide the backdrop for some of the greatest achievements in automotive design and engineering.
Lange has created several watches specifically connected to the event. In 2022, the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH “Hampton Court Edition” featured a white-gold case, black dial, sandstone-coloured numerals and a matching tachymeter scale. A unique piece, it was later sold at Phillips in Geneva for CHF 1,058,500 including buyer’s premium, at the time, a record auction result for a Lange wristwatch. The proceeds went to The Prince’s Trust.
More recently, the DATOGRAPH UP/DOWN “Hampton Court Edition”, created for the Concours of Elegance 2024, continued the same tradition, combining Lange’s technical approach to chronographs with a design inspired by the event.
The collector mindset
There is another reason why the two worlds fit so well.
Classic-car collectors understand that ownership is only part of the experience. A rare automobile needs to be maintained, studied and preserved, ideally for the next generation. The same mindset exists among serious watch collectors, for whom originality, provenance, condition and craftsmanship can be just as important as the object itself.
This is ultimately what a Concours celebrates: not simply what something is, but how it has survived.
The connection extends across the Atlantic. In 2023, A. Lange & Söhne became Presenting Partner of the Audrain Newport Concours d’Elegance in Rhode Island, where more than 180 vintage cars were presented during the wider Motor Week alongside a curated selection of Lange timepieces.
Whether it is a finely finished movement or a meticulously preserved engine, the fascination comes from the same place: the combination of human craftsmanship, technical ingenuity and the passage of time.
Taking time to look closer
Perhaps that is the greatest connection of all.
In a world increasingly obsessed with speed and immediacy, both the classic automobile and the mechanical watch encourage us to slow down. At a Concours, nobody is really in a hurry. The cars are there to be admired, the watches to be examined, and the details to be discovered.
This September, at Hampton Court Palace, A. Lange & Söhne will once again bring these two worlds together. Watchype will be there alongside the manufacture, sharing the cars, the watches and the stories behind them, and taking a closer look at what Lange has brought to this year’s edition.
Because, in the end, the real pleasure is not simply in looking at a beautiful object.
It is in understanding what makes it special.
